Throughout the year, we make snack mixes for a lot of different themes and holidays. This year, we made the Holiday Red and Green Snack Mix for our local school’s cookie swap day! Technically, those gingerbread people count as cookies😊

Our Holiday Red and Green Snack Mix starts with popcorn, frosted shredded wheat cereal and bite sized oyster crackers. Break up the chocolate sandwich cookies and toss in the marshmallows. Next, add the yogurt covered pretzels (shown here is white chocolate mini sandwich cookies, but they are sometimes hard to find), seasonal coated chocolate and candy. Next up is the mint baking bits. Gently mix it all together. Carefully add the gingerbread cookies. You may want to save a few colorful items for the very top when the Snack Mix is first opened.

The best part about the Holiday Red and Green Snack Mix is that it can be customized based on your taste and preference. Around Christmas time, it seems like there’s as much candy as Halloween! It’s so fun to gather up all of the ingredients (I do this over a few weeks) and see what kind of seasonal candy is available at the market. Choose colorful and flavorful snacks- a mix of salty and sweet usually balances each handful. The options are endless!

The Holiday Red and Green Snack Mix is a quintessential make ahead snack. AND you can easily double the batch. Bonus- make Holiday Red and Green Snack Mix Brownies! Prepare brownie batter according to the box’s instructions. Stir in 1 cup of the Holiday Red and Green Snack Mix to the brownie batter. Place in the baking dish. Top with 3/4 cup of the Holiday Red and Green Snack Mix Snack Mix and bake as directed.

You’ll soon find out why it’s the most wonderful time of the year!

instructions:

How to cook Holiday Red and Green Snack Mix

  1. Open contents of all ingredients.
  2. In an oversized clean rectangle food storage plastic container, 1.5 gallon or larger, begin to assemble the ingredients almost like a lasagna.
  3. First, pour an even layer of the pretzels, then the cereal, next the oatmeal cookies, and add the yogurt pretzels.
  4. Layer the white and seasonal chocolate chips, followed by the marshmallow bits.
  5. Finally, place the wafer cookies gently on top, and top with Hershey’s kisses.
  6. Mix carefully by hand all of the ingredients.
  7. Using a large plastic cup, disseminate ingredients into goodie bags or smaller containers.

NOTES:

• If you are making treat bags, you will need 2 of the 5 oz. bags of seasonal gingerbread people, one for each treat bag. • Get creative, adjust the ingredients to suit your personal taste! Try different cereal, cookies, yogurt covered raisins, nonpareils, chocolate Christmas bells, silver coated almonds, nuts, and winter jellybeans. Note, the jellybeans will fall to the bottom, so add the candy last.
• If you have dietary concerns, you can adjust this recipe for allergies, vegan or gluten free restrictions, just watch out for all of the labels. • The Holiday Red and Green Snack Mix makes approximately two-three 64 oz. large food storage plastic containers, depending on your selections.
• Use clear 6x9 treat bags tied with ribbon for parties. • Store at room temperature in an airtight container for up to a month.
